 1997年Mariah发行了她的个人第7张专辑Butterfly。这张以蝴蝶为象征的专辑是Mariah的突破专辑，Mariah无论从形象还是歌曲风格，都和以往有了极其不同的转变。造型上她变的更加性感，而曲风也有以往的抒情，向Hip-Hop方向靠近。整张专辑显的活泼，丰富。

专辑首周就登上了专辑榜第一名，成为冠军专辑。5白金的销量也证明了该专辑的成功。在美国，专辑销量为5,800,000张。专辑中产生了两支冠军曲，"Honey"和"My All"。

“我的音乐从来没有如此个人化”Mariah说。只要浏览歌词就不难发现这一点。从音乐来讲，从"Honey"开始Mariah就努力向Hip-Hop靠近。不管怎样，新的Mariah都不像Music Box和Daydream里面的Mariah。

专辑在美国和很多国家都是双封面发行，另一封面如右图。2017年10月20日，为庆祝专辑发行20周年，美国推出了Butterfly彩色黑胶唱片供歌迷收藏，也是这张唱片在美国的首次发行。
